Greenland Phantom

Challenge: The client on Tortola wanted insect protection for a compact set of French doors, but multiple local contractors inspected the site and concluded there wasn’t enough room for a conventional screen. Bulky or permanent external systems that would obstruct the view or be vulnerable in storms was ruled out. We needed a discreet solution that respected the slim door profiles and the realities of living on the island. Solution: We proposed the low‑profile Phantom Legacy retractable screen and custom-framed installation around the French door openings so the system reads as one with the doors and is practically invisible when stowed. This approach preserved the sightlines while providing insect protection; it’s supported by Phantom’s product literature and our field experience in the BVI. Screens should be retracted ahead of storms.

Virgin Gorda

Challenge: The client had installed inexpensive roll shutters imported from China that were not HVHZ-compliant. In under a year the shutters began to corrode in the island’s salt air and on exposed hillsides, leaving rust stains on two newly built homes and creating an immediate risk during the BVI hurricane season (June 1–November 30). The problem required removal of the failing assemblies and remediation of staining while balancing the owner’s desire to keep the original look of the houses. Solution: Windor removed the non-compliant shutters, documented the corrosion and staining with photos and removal records, and installed HVHZ‑compliant roll shutters powder‑coated for coastal durability and fitted with stainless‑steel hardware rated for Category‑5 hurricane loads. We explained the practical trade‑offs—more durable materials and stronger fixings add weight and cost but are necessary on hillside, salt‑spray exposures—and provided site‑specific anchoring and maintenance guidance to minimise future corrosion and ensure performance through future hurricane seasons.

VISAR Rescue Port

Challenge: The original gate opening on the Tortola rescue port was too small to accept the larger Visar rescue vessel, and the site sits exposed with constant salt air and full hurricane-season risk (June 1 – November 30). Enlarging the opening risked undermining masonry and the building’s security and weather resistance if not properly supported. The practical trade-off was between creating a maximized clear opening for the vessel and adding the structural reinforcement and storm‑resistant detailing necessary for a coastal, hurricane-prone location. Solution: We opened and reinforced the existing aperture to accept a wider roll shutter, installing a structural frame and lintel works to maintain building integrity and allow the vessel to be housed securely. All steps were recorded with site measurements, drawings and photographs; finishes and fixings were specified for coastal durability and to be secured for hurricane season. The approach reduced long‑term exposure and restored secure storage for the Visar, at the cost of temporary access disruption and the required structural strengthening to balance opening size with resilience.

Chalwell Estate

Challenge: The client found traditional Shutter Panels too slow and physically demanding to install when a storm warning arrives, and they didn’t want to manage separate storage on a steep, salt‑air hillside property. Any solution had to be quick to deploy by one person, tuck away neatly when not in use, and tolerate the higher gust exposure we see in the BVI during hurricane season (June 1–Nov 30). That combination ruled out the panel/storage approach despite its other merits. Solution: We fitted every opening with White 55mm Manual Roll Shutters using Windor’s large spring‑assist systems so the curtain rolls into an integrated headbox — no separate storage required and much faster to close. The spring assist keeps units up to roughly 500 lbs manually operable, retaining a simple, power‑free solution suited to urgent storm preparation. Trade‑offs are honest: heavier curtains need regular inspection and corrosion‑aware maintenance in the salt air, and manual systems demand care during operation. We supplied specification sheets, operation guidance and a recommended maintenance checklist so the client can rely on the system through the BVI storm season.

BVI Tourist Baord

Challenge: Tortola site exposed to salt air and periodic high winds, the client told us their existing Bahama shutters were too heavy for female staff to open and close repeatedly through long service hours. They needed a reliable way to reduce daily manual effort while maintaining security outside trading hours and giving due respect to the island’s hurricane season (June 1–November 30). Any solution had to balance ease of use, corrosion resistance and wind performance given the seaside exposure. Solution: We replaced the Bahama shutters with motorized roll shutters controlled by a keyed switch and finished in bronze to blend with the façade; the system has been in operation since late 2024. Motorization solved the daily ergonomics and improved secure closure, but it does introduce dependence on power and additional mechanical maintenance in a salt‑air environment — trade‑offs we explained up front. To manage those risks we delivered as‑built drawings, a staff briefing on storm procedures and a recommended maintenance schedule, and specified corrosion‑resistant components and protective wiring measures appropriate to BVI conditions.

Launch note: first release shows only authentic Windor projects with owner authorization — fewer real projects beat borrowed imagery.
